(The message that follows is a little generic, but that's because it was originally written for the general RPG boards. Hopefully it doesn't sound too odd on this one...) Dear friends and fellow gamers, I'm very pleased to announce that DYNASTIES & DEMAGOGUES, the sourcebook that helps you add political intrigue to your D20 game, is now shipping to distributors! John Nephew and his merry gang at Atlas Games have been packing boxes all day, and this means that the book will arrive in stores very soon. I've been shamelessly promoting the book for a while, and now I've got to give it one last push. I need your help. The best help this book can get as it hits the stores is reviews. Positive reviews (hopefully there'll be lots), negative reviews (hopefully there'll be only a few), any reviews are good because they let readers know the book is available and help them decide if they want it for themselves. Regardless of what the reviews say, I want to see plenty of reviews showing up as the book hits the shelves. So I'm putting my author copies where my mouth is. I've got 6 copies coming to me that I will give away to 6 published reviewers who are willing to commit to getting a review published in their venue of choice by Friday, May 16. It doesn't matter if you like the book nor not. It doesn't matter if you like me or if you hate my guts. If you can promise me you'll get that review up and you've got some credits to prove you can do it -- and while my very limited supplies last, of course <g> -- then I'll give you a copy. Here's some information on the book: http://www.spacecrime.com/dynasties.htm and here's the link to sign up to review it: http://www.spacecrime.com/dynasty_call.htm Thanks for you consideration, and I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on DYNASTIES & DEMAGOGUES. best wishes, Chris Aylott itinerant author and bookseller

So far, I've received over a dozen review requests in less than 24 hours, including some people I'm personally honored to have take an interest in the book. I'm going to have some very hard decisions to make on Monday. That said, I *haven't* made any decisions yet, so anyone who hasn't sent in a request should definitely feel encouraged to do so! I've seen Chris' posts about this here, at Pyramid, and rpg.net. And I'm crossing my fingers and REALLY hoping he picks me although I don't think my chances are good. :)

Also EN World. And your chances definitely improved when you sent the Mexican serape band to sing "I Only Have Eyes for You". That's the kind of extra effort that we all can admire... :) cheers, Chris

Just as a further update -- I've made my selections (which was tough, because I got a lot of great responses), and am sending the relevant emails out to folks. Thank you for showing so much interest! cheers, Chris

Well I picked up a copy this weekend, and I have to say this is really a great book. I have a campaign that had ended with a bunch of the players ending up as nobility. I always felt that the campaign was still hanging there and with this book I have finally figured out how I am going to finish it. Thanks. Justin Franklin

That's so cool. You know, that's exactly where so many campaigns go. (That and, "After cleaning out the dungeon/ruins, we turn it into our stronghold and start taking control of the region!") And that need for help when campaigns reach that stage is exactly why I was so psyched to be publishing this book!

I do have a question about personality feats. Do you just get to select a personality feat or does it require the use of one of your feats? And if so then what about the Transitional feat? Justin

Personality feats are bought with regular feat slots. (You can only have one personality feat). Buying the feat is a bit of an investment -- if you don't use the feat, it's wasted, but you can get a lot of out the investment if you use it. The Transitional personality feat lets you change from one personality feat to the other. It's designed to let people change their character conceptions in a gradual manner, while still being rewarded for playing with personality. That keeps people from just jerking around between personality extremes while still allowing a conflicted character to play though the experience of inner conflict. cheers, Chris Aylott The Space-Crime Continuum Northampton, MA

Not a biggie. I'm still trying to find time to review Streets of Silver, 2nd World, and Dark Inheritance. I do need to start paying more attention though. You'd think that I of all people would catch a subject like that over at En World. :-)

I want to see how this project works out, and maybe do something similar in the future. I was thinking for new releases that we could have people qualify for a drawing to get a review copy of a new release (qualifying meaning, say, having done a review of an Atlas product in the past on RPGNow, ENWorld, or wherever). Out of the qualifying pool we'd choose people randomly to get a new book, which they'd have to review somewhere to continue to qualify for future books. In fact, we might start with already-published books. I'd really like it if we had more titles on ENWorld that had enough reviews to qualify for the top-20 list. (They might not have the score to actually make it to the list, but our real problem is just not enough fans writing reviews!)

That Nephew guy, he is a cunning, cunning man. :) I think this is a fine idea, assuming we do in fact get thoughtful and timely reviews and see some signs that the reviews have affected sales (hopefully for the good). The two things I would recommend is: a) Be picky about who's qualified. What they think about various game isn't important, but their work should show that they *do* think about the games instead of just spouting a political or artistic position. Enthusiasm and articulate prose count for a lot. b) Once a pool is established, make sure the final choice process steers reviews to a variety of sources. I very much wanted people with a good rep in each of the places the review, and I think I got that. Assuming this does go well, I might just stick my head in the lion's den again for "Last Hero" -- we'll have to see what happens! yours, Chris Aylott http://www.spacecrime.com/

Damn, I'd love to get into that action. I've always wondered how people go about getting review copies for books. Unfortunately, living in Australia would most likely screw my chances of being in the 'pool' (although I've got a number of Atlas reviews on RPG.net). ~Alex pax

It wouldn't hose your chances, but it would mean that you'd be waiting a long time for your review copy to arrive if you scored one (we'd be using the cheapest available delivery method).
