I have just returned to Ars Magica after about 10 years off and I am really enjoying it, I forgot how great the magic is. Anyways, I seem unable to find a message board that has a lot of action going on, any suggestions? Thanks

Welcome back.

The forums have not much changed in your absence, actually. The Berkeley list is still where the hardcore fans annoy each other. More polite foums exist here (the official one, in the sense that Atlas's staff scan it) and over at Gaming Outpost.

The BerkList seems to be the most active, but I suspect some pressing need has driven most of the vocal fans into a bevvy of activity, since David Chart recently announced that the second round playtests had just finished and some new ones were starting up.

I'd suggest RPG.net as a good place to go too, as Ars Magica threads will typically catch the attention of both Adam Bank and Jeremiah Genest, and other SMARMs.

Second round playtests? You don't mean, SECOND ROUND playtests? as in fifth edition SECOND ROUND playtests? Do you? If that's the case, I think I'm heading to BerkList.

I don't think that's it. I've only playtested a few times (for Pendragon sups), but it didn't take up extra time, it just took over my standard game time.

The quietness in the Berklist is due to the usual fluctuations of the stars, not any particular playtesting. After all, the stellar people who were in the playtest of Fire and Ice or Blood and Sand didn't stop posting during their time - if anything they ramped up because they were excited, but repressed. 8)

Who can say why? However, in my two or three years on the list, this is the quietest its ever been.

I'd (try to) hot things up, but I'm bogged down with various non-study related university things. Taking time out to illustrate Hermes Portal articles and polish off some old HP proposed articles also means less time spent actually talking about Ars on the list (or any forum).

Perhaps when SoI comes out, and I review it, there will be a bit of discussion.

Perhaps it is my learned behavior of deleting most of the posts before I read them if the list is too busy, but the Berkley list seems a bit more civil now than it was a year or so ago. (But perhaps not so friendly as it was in 96-98).

My understanding is that after Michael de Verteuil boycotted Adam Bank's posts, the majority of the really nasty flame-wars stopped.

I can only speak for one individual, but I found that my activity on the list (never extraorinary to begin with) dropped during the playtest of the those books. If nothing else, it becomes hard to participate when much of the discussion is speculation on the contents of said books.

Besides, I found that playtesting took more time and effort than my usual game did -- particularly writing up the results after the fact.

There are instructions in the Ars Magica FAQ, and the mailing lists section of Project Redcap, which also links to a bit of other Ars Magica information.
