My interpretation is that on the second round, you would give a wound to Soldier2 and Soldier3. I take the rule to mean the vanguard must take at least as many wounds as the other group members over the whole combat. Put another way, no one in the group can take a second wound until the vanguard has taken his second wound. Now this still leaves open the question of what happens when a group takes two Light wounds on Round 1 and two Medium wounds on Round 2. However it seems the intent is that no group member can be more wounded than the vanguard, so I would say in this case the vanguard has to take the heavier wound. But that means if you inflict an increasing level of wound each time (light, then medium, then heavy), the vanguard will wear down much more quickly than if you did three Medium wounds in a row. Yet another reason why I don't like group combat. Note that on p. 172, the rules seem to indicate you don't have to use the group combat rules if you don't want to.
