newbie question,

How would a magus go about discerning the properties of magical items they might come across?

The magus in question would take the item to his laboratory, and spend
a full season there. Rules for this are found on page 100 on ArM5,
"Investigating Enchantments". Here they are in a nutshell.

If you have a paranoid (some would say wise) magus, he might try to
check first if there are any Watching Wards cast on the item. They might
be found on Intellego Vim -spells if the totals are high enough.

The actual investigating uses magus' Intellego Vim Lab Total. You roll
a stress die and add it to the Lab Total and compare it to the lowest
power in the item. If the roll exceeds the power, the magus finds it,
its uses and trigger actions, and may roll for the next power in the
item. Magus may roll the dice as long as he is discovering new powers.

Note that while a magus may find protective spells cast on the item
with spells, he needs at least one season to investigate the instilled
effects on the item.
