Card and Board Games Gloomy Questions

Hey there,

My girlfriend recently picked up Gloom - she bet me to it - and we love it more than is probably healthy. But I have a rule questions that someone might have an answer to.

When you play a modifier that effects your draw limit, is that for good or just for that turn? We've been playing for that turn, but I wanted to be sure.

Thanks,
Morgan

Hi there. I'm glad you're enjoying Gloom!

Modifier effects are always active as long as they're visible (ie. as long as another card isn't covering up the text), unless the effect says otherwise. So, for card draw limits, you'd be plus or minus one card until a new modifier is played on top of it, or until it's otherwise removed from the character.

Right so. Glad I asked - that should make games a little more... interesting :)

Thanks very much,
Morgan

I played a lot of demo games at the GAMA Trade Show last month, and I kept finding myself delighted with tricks that came up in play...there's more subtlety and cool combos in play than seems apparent at first blush.

For example, in one game I played a really strong negative modifier on the player to my right. Its rules text forced an immediate discard of the player's entire hand. Normally you'd play this on your own character on the end of the turn (and then draw back up), but this hosed my opponent because he wouldn't get a chance to draw until the end of his next turn -- and during his turn he'd have no cards to play.

Then the player after me played another positive-modifier card on top of the one I'd played, adding insult to injury!

It was sweet.

I believe the way to play that cards is as long as you can read the text on the card the modifier applies. So its not just for the turn its played but for as long as you can read it.
