Jackie's Staff Pick: Dice Miner
Every year around this time, I imagine warm cocoa in hand and peaceful, dimly lit rooms with twinkling lights. In reality, it’s a house full of people, snacks and libations on every surface, and the familiar question, “What should we do now?”
In my case, the answer is Dice Miner. It’s quick, smart, and always fun to play. Plus, it has the satisfaction of both playful scheming and clever timing, without ever feeling heavy. That mix is what keeps me bringing Dice Miner back to my table.
With a family of six (plus extra friends), chaos is pretty much guaranteed. In Dice Miner, I have an excuse to create that chaos without feeling like everything is out of control. Pouring a mountain of dice onto the table is absolute mayhem, but with purpose. How clever! Every turn you’re faced with tiny, sometimes dramatic, decisions. Do you grab the die that’s clearly amazing, or the one that is definitely cursed but might pay off in the end? And when someone snatches the exact die you wanted right before your turn? Oh the betrayal!
What really keeps us hooked, though, is how effortlessly the game balances luck and strategy. Sure, the dice roll as they please, but you get all these satisfying ways to manipulate them. Hero powers, rerolls, beer-swapping shenanigans. It’s never the same game twice! It plays fast, teaches even faster, and hits that magical zone where experienced gamers can sink their teeth in while total beginners still have a blast.
The perfect game to pull out when the cocoa’s gone cold, the snacks are half gone, and someone inevitably asks, “Okay, one more?” Dice Miner is my answer every time. A little unpredictability, a lot of laughter, and exactly the kind of game that turns a crowded, noisy holiday night into the memory you’ll be talking about next year
