Bunnies ... They're So Cute, No?

Published by: Atlas Staff
Once again, February brings us Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month, and this little plug about how great bunnies are. In case you're not alrady aware of it, John and I are happy slaves to three of these critters -- Chimaera (aka Chimi), Wendigo (Windy), and El Chupacabra (Poncho for short). Poncho is our newest addition ...

This summer an inhumane breeding operation was shut down in the Twin Cities, and over 70 mistreated rabbits were confiscated. The independent rescue group that John and I volunteer with -- Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society -- nearly doubled its normal foster space to make sure that none of them had to be euthanized for lack of space in the shelters. John and I actually opened our home to four of these unfortunate bunnies, and it was quite an experience! Most of them were suffering from sinus infections from the unsanitary conditions they were kept in, and two of them had to be shaved because their long angora-like fur was so matted. Below is a picture of Pooka, who despite the indignity of her haircut was the first of the confiscation bunnies to find a forever home! Two more found a home within a few months, but we just couldn't say goodbye to Poncho, so he stayed with us.

And yes, we were the ones who got to name the foster bunnies ... the other two were Scylla and Charybdis (Char, like charcoal), if you must know. ;)

If you're interested in making a big difference in a bunny's life, Petfinder is a great place to find a rabbit who needs a home in your area. If you already have a bunny at home, consider that adopting a second rabbit might make his or her life all the more full.
