What is the Magical Kitties Open License?
- The text of Magical Kitties Save the Day core Rulebook and its sourcebooks has been released under an open license: the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-SA 4.0).
- The Licensed Material is the TEXT of the game books. It does not include the trade dress, graphic design, artwork, cartography, or logos unless specified.
- The open license is a COPYRIGHT license, not a TRADEMARK license; use of trademarks associated with Magical Kitties may be permitted subject to conditions below.
- There is no System Reference Document (SRD). The full text of the released books may be extracted from PDFs available for sale on our webstore.
- Interested parties may contact Atlas Games about licensing Magical Kitties outside of the open license.
Magical Kitties Open License Giveaway
July 2026
To encourage our fans to contribute by releasing their own Magical Kitties Open License material, we're also hosting a special giveaway for the launch, with nearly $2,700 in prizes!
We'll award a FREE digital package to the first 30 people to post a Magical Kitties Open License release on DriveThruRPG.com, by July 31, 2026. That's a $90 prize for each contributor!
Requirements:
- Releases must take place in and showcase the Magical Kitties setting
- They must be original work without legal entanglements (e.g., using copyrighted material from outside the Magical Kitties products)
- Release your work under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license.
- Display the Magical Kitties Open License logo and its new legal statement
- Put your release up on DriveThruRPG.com, and get approval (takes 3 days or more)
- Post a link & description in Magical Kitties Open License Announcements on the Atlas Games Forum
- Post everything by July 31, 2026

Why Release Magical Kitties as Open License?
Atlas Games has had the amazing opportunity to publish Magical Kitties Save the Day, supported by its vibrant fan community. We feel it's time to give back to our fans, and let them take the game in new directions we haven't had the resources to explore. We want to make it possible for fans and third parties to create and share, commercially or otherwise, material that is explicitly compatible with the Magical Kitties setting. And the new Magical Kitties Open License logo makes it easy for creators to show that their release is compatible.
What Does This Mean for Magical Kitties?
You are free to:
- Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially.
- Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.
- Atlas Games cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.
Under the following terms:
- Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests Atlas Games endorses you or your use. Since adapted works are likely to make use of elements from numerous titles, you may use this general attribution statement:
- ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.
- No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

With these trademark limitations:
Atlas Games trademarks — You may apply the Magical Kitties Open License Logo to, and use the trademark "Magical Kitties" within, any Adapted Material that you produce from the Magical Kitties text under the Creative Commons license. If you do so, you must add this statement in your legalese:
